Absence of Menses
In a woman who has not had a period for six months or more or a woman who has reached age 16 and has not a period yet, a diagnosis of amenorrhea can be made. Amenorrhea is the absence of menses. The many causes of amenorrhea include pregnancy, underlying medical disorders, extreme physical or psychological stress, abnormal pelvic anatomy, irregular egg release from the ovaries, and menopause.
Any woman who is experiencing an absence of menses by age 16 or no menses for 6 months for more should be seen by a physician for evaluation. The evaluation includes a thorough history, a pelvic examination to evaluate pelvic anatomy, a pelvic ultrasound to further evaluate pelvic anatomy, and a hormonal evaluation to determine ovarian function.
The absence of menses can have significant implications on general health including bone health, uterine health, and cardiovascular health. This is why a physician consultation is very important.
