Gynecology Q & A
What is gynecology?
Gynecology is a field that focuses on the female reproductive system. At her practice, Dr. Grier offers a broad spectrum of gynecology services, such as:
- Annual women’s wellness exams
- Preventive care and cancer screenings
- Preconception counseling
- Fertility evaluations
- Birth control counseling
- Menopause counseling
- Pap tests
- Evaluation and treatment of abnormal Pap test results
- Pelvic exams
She can also diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), pelvic prolapse conditions, urinary incontinence, menopause symptoms, and pelvic pain.
What should I expect from a gynecological exam?
What happens at your gynecological visit depends on your age. For adolescents getting their first exam, Dr. Grier may focus on what to expect from menstrual periods while middle-aged women may receive counseling on menopause.
However, most appointments involve a physical exam and a thorough review of your medical history. Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Grier may also perform additional tests and exams, such as:
- An external genital exam
- A pelvic exam that checks your vagina, cervix, and internal organs
- A Pap test to screen for abnormal changes to your cervical cells
Dr. Grier tailors your gynecology exam to your needs, and your exam is also a good time for you to ask any questions you have about your health.
How are gynecological conditions diagnosed and treated?
If you come to the office with specific concerns or if Dr. Grier discovers something unusual during your exam, she may suggest specific diagnostic tests, such as an ultrasound or blood test.
In some cases, you may need a more advanced diagnostic procedure, such as hysteroscopy or laparoscopy. With a hysteroscopy, Dr. Grier inserts a thin, lighted instrument with a camera into your uterus through your vagina. The hysteroscope projects an image of your uterus onto a screen to help with the diagnosis.
A laparoscopy is similar, except Dr. Grier makes a small incision inside your vagina or on your abdomen to insert the laparoscope. She may suggest laparoscopy to diagnose or treat certain conditions, such as endometriosis. She may also use this technique to perform minimally invasive hysterectomies, which removes your uterus using tiny incisions.
